Bach Flower RemediesThe Bach Flower Remedies were developed by Dr Edward Bach in the 1920s and 30s. After a career in orthodox medicine and homeopathy, Dr Bach was inspired to turn to nature to find remedies which would treat emotional states and restore balance to mind and body. Like an increasing number of doctors today, he believed that the mind plays an important role in maintaining health and recovery from illness. By the time he died, in 1936, he had developed 38 remedies prepared from wild herbs, bushes and trees. He called them his “Healing Herbs”. These essences can be used alone or along with other methods of healing. They are still made where Dr Bach first created them in Oxfordshire as well as by a number of producers worldwide in accordance with Bach’s original instructions. There are two methods of preparing the flower remedies – sun potentising or boiling. Sun potentising method – Firstly, the flowers are picked, in a clean location in the early morning. They are then floated in a glass bowl filled with pure spring water. This is left in the same place as the flowers were picked, for about four hours. This infused water is then mixed with brandy to preserve it and is called the “mother tincture”. It will be diluted to produce the flower remedy. The boiling method is chiefly used to prepare the flowers of trees, which bloom early in the year, before the sun is hot. Flowering twigs are cut and placed in a pan. This is filled with fresh spring water until the twigs are completely covered. The pan is brought to the boil and the twigs are pushed down with another twig from the same tree. They are then simmered for thirty minutes. Once cold, the essence is strained, mixed with brandy and is then ready to dilute to form the remedy.
