Description
A fragrant, perennial, white flowered, damp meadow herb. It is common throughout Europe and can also be found in the eastern US and Canada. It has reddish stems up to 1.2m tall and delicate leaves which are dark green on top and whitish beneath. The flowers grow in clusters.

The ariel parts are gathered during the flowering period and dried.

Effects
It is a good digestive remedy, and particularly good for diarrhoea in children. It can also be used for treating fevers and respiratory complaints. The anti imflammatory action of the salicylates present in Meadowsweet make it useful for treating rheumatic complaints and flu.
Method
The fresh flower tops can be taken as an infusion to promote sweating and a distilled eye wash made from the flowers can be used to treat itching eyes. It cn also be taken as a liquid extract or a tincture.
Cautions
This herb should be avoided by anyone with a sensitivity to salicylates. |
